Substitute stainless steel appliances for stainless steel finish appliances. Appliance manufacturers now offer stainless steel finish appliances. These appliances don`t give the fingerprints that stainless steel gives, and the appearance is still modern and luxurious. Instead of crystal and expensive lighting fixtures, choose `off the shelf` fixtures. Pendant, recessed, and under counter lighting fixtures can be expensive. Use varieties that are readily available at your favorite lighting or home improvement store. Instead of granite and mosaic tile backsplashes, consider using glass and ceramic tile. Mosaic tile and granite can be expensive and laborious to install. With the wide variety of tiles the options are limitless. You can achieve a high end backsplash, to compliment your luxurious kitchen without the cost!
Given the numerous shapes, sizes and colors available, ceramic tile is probably the most versatile option (it`s also proven to be timeless). There`s plenty of room to play with patterns while still maintaining clean lines: stack tiles in columns, stagger them, or lay them at an angle. Most tile requires minimal maintenance, just be sure to seal the grout so it doesn`t get stained or absorb water. Most people are after matching stainless steel appliances in their kitchen. Why? Because they look sharp and are central to a modern, updated design. Using stainless steel as the backsplash–either with tiles or a solid sheet–is a continuation of that same feel and creates a sleek, uniform look. The material is easy to wipe clean, doesn`t require grout and will last forever.
Poured concrete counters offer strength, style and are seemingly timeless in appearance. They offer a natural, organic look for those who are wanting such in their kitchens. These counters need to be sealed well, perhaps more than once, to prevent staining. Poured concrete can be tinted to be any color you wish. If sealed it is stain resistant and can be cast and poured into any shape you desire. Its appearance improved with age, as opposed to many others that start to look weathered and dingy after just a few short years. While concrete is heat resistant the sealer is not and hot pots and pans should not be placed directly on top of the concrete. Likewise, cutting boards should be used as well as chopping directly on to the concrete could damage the sealant. Concrete, requires just a little bit of maintenance and is a very desirable option at a very desirable price.
Think about what kind of design (whether custom or prefabricated) is going to provide the most utility by asking the following questions: What will it be used for the most? What particular features will enhance the existing kitchen? What does the space need? If the room lacks cabinet space, you`ll want storage. If you don`t have a kitchen or dining room table (and even if you do), extra seating might be a priority.
